One year and three months have passed since I left Japan. I lost my smartphone and wallet within a few months of starting, but I have managed to continue traveling to this point. However, the infection spread from January 2020, the coronavirus spread to the world in an instant. Around January when the infection started, we thought that we could continue traveling for a while because there were no infected people in the African region where we were staying. The infection may have spread in places you can’t actually see. . .

In January we were traveling around Egypt.

There are many foreign tourists in Egypt, where there are many ruins such as the Pyramid, and the coronavirus will spread quickly. I started to think.

It was when we entered Sudan (2020/2/2) that our journey began to be affected. Before entering the border immigration (Sudan side), each staff member wearing a mask checked the body temperature, but it was a simple check.

I was in good health so I was able to enter Sudan without any problems. However, after entering Sudan, I was discriminated against because I was Asian. It is sad to be told every day. But many Sudanese are very kind and favorite countries.

Around this time, when I was looking at the information of other travelers and people living overseas, there was a lot of discrimination against Asians in various countries.

We were discriminated against by some people in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, there is a strong desire to get more money from tourists, so it was even more stressful that prices were raised at various places. They judge it visually and decide that it is “corona”.
Why do they react like this? What makes them do that? We thought but didn’t understand.
It is OK they think in their hearts, but they call us “Corona!!” in a loud voice from the other side of the road.

But in fact, I’m also worried about finding Chinese tourists.

However, when I talked to a Chinese traveler, I received the word “sorry” from that person.

It’s true that the coronavirus spread in China, but it’s not that the Chinese are bad.

In the country we were staying in, no one was infected yet, but the news of the coronavirus was being broadcast daily on TV and radio. I also occasionally watched news about the cruise ship “Diamond Princess,” where mass outbreaks occurred.

Even if I don’t understand the local language, I can only hear the word “Corona virus”.

After entering Kenya (2020/2/26), some people disliked us.

People who cover their mouths as they pass by, people who frighten and avoid us.However, we weren’t infected, so we thought we could continue our journey for a while.

On the other hand, other travelers felt that being discriminated against was stressful, so some travelers once interrupted the journey.

After I entered Uganda, there were places where I could take measures such as alcohol disinfection of my hands. It was less discriminatory than Kenya.

In Rwanda, alcohol was disinfected at the hotel check-in. However, the number of foreign tourists has decreased due to the spread of infection in many countries.

I entered Tanzania (March 14, 2020).

A few days after entering Tanzania, changes appeared in the city. People using a mask came out and a hand washing tank was placed at the storefront. An infected person came out in a nearby town.

The school in Tanzania was closed immediately. However, the ticket office of the long-distance bus is very crowded due to the large movement of students without refraining from going out.

I thought that the neighboring countries had no infected people yet, so the journey could continue.

There was a possibility that the borders would suddenly be closed, so we decided that we should stay in a place where crowds can be avoided, and we went to Zanzibar Island, Tanzania (2020/3/22).

I stayed for a few days in a town with a narrow maze called Stone Town, but there are many people because it is the largest town on the island. At this point, there was one infected person on Zanzibar. So I moved from Stone Town to Paje, a seaside town.

Of course, there was an option to return to Japan immediately, but I thought that returning to Japan was a risk rather than staying on this island.

However, there is an email from the Japanese Embassy saying, “Please consider returning to Japan as soon as possible.”

We may not be able to go home because the borders are closed, and Japan has a better medical environment. Since we come for sightseeing, there is also a rule of visa period.

If I think only about myself, I think I can go home. But if I go back to Japan, I will go home to my family.

What if I get infected somewhere and go home?

What if the family got infected because of that?

What if I get infected on my way home and infect people around me?

I may take someone’s life.

In order not to create a cause, I have to put myself in an environment where infection is difficult

So, for the time being, I decided to stay in this town (Paje) for a month.

I don’t know what the correct answer is, but the only actions I can do now are to stay here.

We hope this coronavirus in the global problem will settle soon.
